UK businesses need to improve their data backup practices, according to a recent Acronis survey of 600 IT managers in the UK, France and Germany about backup and disaster recovery. More than one-third (38%) of respondent firms do not back up employee workstations, and 20% of IT managers expect it would take them a week to recover their systems in a disaster recovery scenario.

The survey found that 40% of UK IT managers backed up workstations automatically, 22% did it manually and a staggering 38% did not back up workstations at all. The UK results compared unfavourably with those from Germany and France, where only 9% and 6% of respondents, respectively, did not back up workstations.

When asked whether they were confident that they could recover in a disaster recovery scenario, 72% of all respondents thought they could. Twenty-eight percent of those surveyed thought they could recover their systems in a morning, while 10% believed they could do so within an hour. The largest proportion of those questioned thought they could recover all systems within a day, although 20% did not expect to be back online for a whole week.
