The Arts University College at Bournemouth has implemented a 36 TB Isilon IQ clustered NAS product from Isilon Systems to meet high-performance video editing requirements. The new network-attached storage (NAS) environment can withstand multiple drive failures without loss of data and incorporates tiered storage in conjunction with the school's existing Dell PowerEdge storage platform. "Our render farm at peak periods is in use almost 24 hours a day, and the nature of our courses means that projects start and stop all year round with inevitable bottlenecks and deadlines," said Liam Scanlan, reader in the digital environment at the college. "The render farm was previously served jobs from a rack of Dell PowerEdge storage arrays and these have proved very reliable. But when multiple projects are on the go, everything would slow significantly due to lack of performance from our storage farm to our compute cluster." The Isilon scale-out NAS uses multiple 1 Gigabit Ethernet ports aggregated into a 10 Gigabit optical backbone, which serves the various media suites across the campus. Cisco, NetApp and VMware bring Secure Multi-tenancy Design Architecture to the cloud Cisco Systems, NetApp and VMware have announced they will deliver a Secure Multi-tenancy Design Architecture to provide enhanced security in cloud environments by isolating the IT resources and applications of different clients, business units or departments that share a common IT infrastructure. The architecture is based on Cisco's Nexus series switches and Unified Computing System (UCS), NetApp's FAS storage with MultiStore, and VMware's vSphere and vShield Zones. Atempo enhances data deduplication and virtualisation in Time Navigator Atempo has announced enhanced data deduplication capabilities and expanded virtualisation support for Time Navigator, the company's flagship backup and recovery product. Its data deduplication features now offer enhanced usability and performance to optimise storage systems and support remote offices and branch offices (ROBOs). On the virtualisation front, the software features an enhancement of the VMware agent with vSphere support, as well as new Microsoft Hyper-V and Citrix Xen agents that will deliver full virtual machine backup and restoration capabilities. 3PAR announces plug-ins to manage a virtual data centre, thin provisioning guarantee 3PAR has announced two new 3PAR InForm software plug-ins for VMware vSphere and VMware vCenter Server that provide virtual machine (VM)-aware snapshots, rapid online VM recovery and VM-to-storage mapping. 3PAR Recovery Manager for VMware vSphere and the 3PAR Plug-In for VMware vCenter enable 3PAR/VMware customers to protect, recover and manage virtual machines and related storage resources in their virtual data centre and cloud computing environments. Meanwhile, 3PAR has introduced the Get Thin Guarantee that promises capacity savings of at least 50% to customers converting from existing "fat" volumes on traditional storage to new thin volumes on any 3PAR InServ Storage Server with its Thin Built In thin provisioning feature. Under the terms of the programme, 3PAR will guarantee participating customers purchasing InServ F-Class or T-Class arrays that they will halve the amount of raw capacity required to store existing data or 3PAR will make up the shortfall with free additional disk capacity, as well as associated software and support. Compellent storage architect appointed Compellent Technologies has announced the appointment of Mark Shaw as storage architect responsible for delivery, implementation and support of Compellent storage-area networks (SANs) in the UK. Shaw was previously senior IT engineer at Barhale Construction. F5 Networks and NetApp partner for file virtualisation F5 Networks has joined the NetApp Alliance Partner Program as an Advantage Alliance Partner. F5 will collaborate with NetApp to provide customers with application delivery and file virtualisation products. F5's ARX products virtualise file storage and allow data to be migrated automatically using policies. Fujitsu adds dedupe to its data protection appliances Fujitsu is incorporating data deduplication technology across its range of Eternus CS data protection appliances. A new entry-level model (the Eternus CS800) targeted at mid-market customers has also been announced. All Fujitsu Eternus CS appliances are compatible with leading tape libraries, and the CS800 model also supports Symantec's OpenStorage (OST) API, which provides a single point of management across sites and data storage tiers. Infortrend appoints marketing VP Storage array vendor Infortrend has appointed James Hsieh as the company's vice president of global marketing. Hsieh was formerly worldwide and Asia Pacific marketing manager with Hewlett-Packard (HP) Iron Mountain Connected Backup for PC v8.4 supports litigation discovery Iron Mountain has updated its Connected Backup for PC product to support Microsoft Windows 7 users. The upgrade, Version 8.4, will also include support for litigation discovery and is available for license. The subscription version of the service will be available from March 2010. Texas Memory Systems launches open source drivers for RamSan 20 solid-state drive products Texas Memory Systems is delivering Linux and Solaris open source drivers for its RamSan-20 PCIe flash-based solid-state drive (SSD) storage product. With the release, the open source community can integrate and adapt high-performance SSD into a range of environments. By making the driver source available, customers can easily port to custom kernels and currently unsupported operating systems, and add custom enhancements.
