Livedrive has announced the release of Livedrive Backup, an online storage, backup and file-sharing service aimed at consumers and SMEs. Livedrive works in the background, continuously backing up all data without disturbing general use of the machine. Livedrive has also released Livedrive Briefcase, which adds an L: drive to a user's PC. Any files put there are stored on the user's hard drive and also copied online. They can then be accessed using a Web browser. University of Aberdeen deploys BlockMaster SafeStick The University of Aberdeen has deployed more than 200 encrypted BlockMaster SafeStick USB Flash drives to staff to protect data in transit, as well as SafeConsole software to enable central management of the devices. The university -- which has 3,000 staff and 14,000 students -- has deployed SafeSticks to its admin, research and full-time staff members to enable them to benefit from mobile working without the concern of data loss exposing sensitive information or disrupting operations. It has also deployed SafeConsole, BlockMaster's Web-based management solution, to manage, audit and re-set passwords. Both products were deployed through reseller Softek. "SafeStick and SafeConsole have been invaluable to us," said Brian Henderson, head of service delivery at University of Aberdeen. "We recently had a member of staff forget their password. In a normal situation they would have just reached for a new device; however, within five minutes we re-set the SafeStick and restored all the data on it, saving us so much time and hassle." Compellent appoint northern business development manager Compellent Technologies has announced the expansion of its UK team with the appointment of Matt Sinnott-Davies as business development manager. Sinnott-Davies will be responsible for driving sales of Compellent's storage-area network (SAN) products and supporting the company's 100% channel-only partner sales model across northern England and Scotland. Sinnott-Davies joins Compellent from Fordway, an IT infrastructure specialist and Compellent business partner, where he was senior sales executive responsible for key accounts, including Wakefield Council and Cleveland Police. Survey: Recovery time, reducing backup costs biggest pain points A survey commissioned by Double-Take Software has found that 57% of IT organisations see reducing recovery time in the event of IT failure and cutting the cost of backup as the two biggest pain points in backup and disaster recovery (DR). The next most significant difficulties were the ability to roll back to any point in time when recovering workloads and recovery testing. The findings are the result of a survey into attitudes toward backup and the effect of virtualisation on business continuity strategies that was conducted at the Storage Expo show held in London in October. Further findings include the following: 60% of organisations rely on tape to protect their virtualisation implementations, 53% use disk-to-disk backup products, while 23% use proprietary virtualisation products such as VMware's VMotion. Data Robotics launches DroboElite for iSCSI SANs Data Robotics has announced DroboElite, an iSCSI SAN storage that manages itself. DroboElite features a new hardware architecture that includes an enhanced processing engine and dual high-speed iSCSI interfaces with 150% of the performance of previous Drobo models. Multi-host support with LUN affinity allows small and medium businesses (SMBs) with limited IT resources to simplify management and reduce costs by consolidating storage across multiple servers. StorMagic enables VMware HA features StorMagic has announced a high-availability (HA) kit for its SvSAN solution that allows organisations to benefit from advanced VMware virtualisation features. StorMagic's SvSAN HA Kit allows customers to use HA features such as VMware High Availability, VMware VMotion and VMware Distributed Resource Scheduler. A trial copy of SvSAN HA kit is available for download. TMS teams up with NextIO Solid-state storage maker Texas Memory Systems (TMS) will combine its RamSan Flash with NextIO's ICA-2800 Chassis. The joint solution utilises NextIO's PCIe expansion chassis to create a virtualised pool of RamSan PCIe Flash that can be shared across multiple servers. This will improve performance, efficiency and manageability in high-performance computing (HPC) environments and data centres that need to accelerate applications and databases.
