Texas Memory Systems' new 5 million IOPS flash drive

Texas Memory Systems has announced the availability of the RamSan-6200, a flash-based solid-state drive (SSD) storage subsystem that offers capacity of up to 100 terabytes in a 40U rack configuration. The vendor claims the RamSan-6200 can sustain 5 million input/outputs per second (IOPS) with 60 gigabytes per second throughput while using a little more than 6 kilowatts of power.

The RamSan-6200 combines 20 RamSan-620 SSDs in a single data centre rack and uses Texas Memory Systems' TeraWatch software to provide unified management and monitoring from a single GUI console. The system utilises enterprise grade, single-level cell (SLC) Flash, as well as multiple levels of RAID and advanced Flash management algorithms.

"The RamSan-6200 is a breakthrough milestone for flash in the enterprise," said George Crump, an analyst at Storage Switzerland. "The fact that Texas Memory Systems is delivering a flash solution that costs less than one-fifteenth of what a hard disk-based solution can deliver on a cost-per-IOPS basis signals the shift toward flash as a primary component of mainstream storage."
