The Storage Decisions Advanced Backup School, a free one-day seminar at the Hilton London Metropole, kicks off Tuesday 23 June. W. Curtis Preston, executive editor and independent backup expert, will be the seminar presenter.

The UK seminar will address the basics of backup strategies and implementations, as well as the latest trends in backup and optimization technologies, including data deduplication, virtual tape libraries and continuous data protection (CDP).

According to the 2009 SearchStorage.co.UK annual Purchasing Intentions survey, there's a growing interest among UK users in technologies such as data deduplication to speed backups.

The SearchStorage.co.UK survey had 435 respondents, and revealed that use of tape as a backup target is declining as disk-based data protection increases. Thirty-two percent of those surveyed expect their use of tape to decrease this year, 37% said faster backups will have them moving to disk-based backup, while 19% said faster restores are the draw. Only 4% of respondents said they had implemented data deduplication, but 30% said they expect spending on it to increase.

In response to the growing interest in backup among our UK audience members, SearchStorage.co.UK recently assembled some of our best data backup tips for you to check out.

In conjunction with the Storage Decisions Advanced Backup School, W. Curtis Preston will provide answers to readers' backup questions this week and you can read them in our Expert Corner. In one, Preston tackles the issue of monitoring and managing calculated RTOs and RPOs. In another, he discusses if manual updates might be required during a disaster recovery (DR) implementation. And he tells one reader what type of server would have the capacity to serve a 500-person office.

Think you're already a backup expert? Take our data backup quiz or ask your boss to take it.
