Co-op Jersey opts for low-cost DataCore Software SAN

Co-Op Jersey has implemented DataCore Software's SANmelody software-based storage-area network (SAN) as shared storage to support a VMware-based server virtualisation project. The resulting iSCSI SAN -- which replaced existing direct-attached storage (DAS) -- runs on two IBM servers in which all disk writes are replicated instantly across the wide-area network to provide total redundancy.

"Downtime for maintenance and provisioning new servers isn't acceptable," said Don Le Clercq, IT manager at Co-Op Jersey. "To enable this, we have used a combination of two IBM servers along with DataCore's SANmelody to provide a synchronously mirrored high-availability architecture."

DataCore Software's SANmelody is one of a number of emerging software-based storage products that virtualise heterogeneous disk systems into shared storage resources. These have arisen as an alternative to hardware-centric products from vendors, including Hewlett-Packard's LeftHand Networks, Open-E, Seanodes and StorMagic.

Magirus announces reseller credit scheme

Distributor Magirus has announced Magirus Credit Solutions (MCS), a service aimed at providing easier credit options for its resellers. Magirus will provide services, including a 0% finance rental programme of EMC networked storage systems, in conjunction with EMC Global Financial Services, as well as a FastTrack Credit Approval system that lets resellers check the credit approval of potential customers online. Magirus plans to extend the scheme to cover other vendors.

Atempo adds Mac and Celerra capabilities

Data protection and archiving vendor Atempo has announced Atempo Digital Archive (ADA) Version 2.3, which brings in full Mac OS X compatibility, a new Mac-specific administration interface and new support for Apple Xsan. ADA also supports archiving of data from EMC Celerra appliances with HSM filter driver stubbing, and adds full content indexing and search capabilities taken from the Exalead search engine. The new Mac capabilities add to ADA's existing support for Windows, Linux and Solaris platforms.
