This week's storage news:

Data Domain Inc. (now being acquired by NetApp) rolled out secure, file-level data shredding capabilities as a feature in its Retention Lock software option.

Retention Lock now securely overwrites blocks on disk belonging uniquely to deleted deduplicated files, and safe deduplicated data can be efficiently migrated to another system. That allows administrators to clear data sets such as social security numbers from all disks, and then migrate safely duplicated data to another system to free the original system for proper disposal.

The idea is to permanently remove deleted files and restore the system to a state where it looks as if the deleted files never existed. This is a key feature for organizations with record-retention regulations.

Panasas introduces ActiveStor Series 9 SSD arrays

Panasas Inc. released the ActiveStor Series 9 system based on the high-performance Intel X25-E Extreme SATA solid-state drive (SSD). ActiveStor Series 9 uses multiple storage technologies in a synchronized architecture to improve bandwidth and input/output per second.

Terascala to OEM LSI storage system

As part of a new OEM deal, LSI Corp. and Terascala Inc. launched a high-performance computing (HPC) system that combines the LSI Engenio 7900 HPC storage system with the Terascala DTS 4000 parallel file storage appliance.

DataPreserve Pro offers enterprise-level cloud data protection

DataPreserve rolled out DataPreserve Pro, a suite of enterprise-level, cloud-based data protection software and storage. It's powered by RoboBak and designed specifically for managed service providers. Data is compressed and encrypted from multiple remote locations through one central administrative point, then transmitted securely via the Internet to DataPreserve's servers for storage in a high-availability, tier 4 data center.

Fusion-io, Samsung partner on NAS SSD

Cvent saves $500,000 with 3PAR

3PAR said Cvent Inc. has saved $500,000 over five years since deploying 3PAR Utility Storage to consolidate internal systems, support mission-critical Software-as-a-Service offerings via the cloud, and to replace cumbersome and inefficient tape-based backup. The savings come primarily from not having to hire a full-time storage administrator to manage the storage-area network (SAN).

Children's Hospital Boston benefits from AutoVirt

Children's Hospital Boston claims it has reduced its data migration window from almost 12 days to about 27 hours since deploying AutoVirt Inc.'s AutoClone replication software.

Coraid says its AoE is faster than Fibre Channel

Coraid Inc. released tests that show its ATA-over-Ethernet (AoE) SANs running in VMware ESX environments are faster than Fibre Channel (FC) SANs. Using the Iometer benchmarking tool originally developed at Intel Corp., I/O loads were generated for testing a single virtual machine using VMware ESX Server connected to a Coraid EtherDrive SAN. For a 32 KB I/O size, throughput with sequential reads was measured to be 234 MBps for AoE vs. 172 MBps for Fibre Channel.
