IBM updates midrange storage system, software

This week's storage news:

IBM Corp. brought out an upgraded DS5000 midrange storage system and a new version of Tivoli Storage Productivity Center as part of its dynamic infrastructure rollout this week.

The DS5000, based on the Engenio 7900 from IBM OEM partner LSI Corp., includes self-encrypting disk support of 8 Gpbs Fibre Channel (FC) devices. The system scales to 448 drives in a single system. The new version of Tivoli Storage Productivity Center features new analytics to help identify hot spots for problem determination, and quick tuning to improve performance and storage utilization.

QLogic scores InfiniBand OEM deal with IBM

IBM will sell QLogic Corp.'s 1200 Series quad data-rate 40 Gbps InfiniBand switches with its x86 servers through an OEM deal. The 1200 switches scale to 864 ports and are targeted at the high-performance computing (HPC) market.

Emulex provides SAN connectivity for HP StorageWorks

Emulex Corp. LightPulse Fibre Channel host bus adapters (HBAs) now support the new HP StorageWorks Enterprise Virtual Array (EVA) 6400 running Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2008, HP-UX 11i and Linux operating systems.

Arkeia Software and FalconStor create partnership

Arkeia Software Inc. and FalconStor Software Inc. have formed a sales, marketing and technology partnership to create faster and more flexible backup and restores of deduplicated data sets across deployment modes. The partnership was created after the completion of rigorous testing and validation between the FalconStor Virtual Tape Library (VTL) Virtual Appliance and Arkeia Network Backup v8 backup software. This ensured seamless operation between the enterprise-class deduplication and backup products as virtual appliances.

Axxana launches 'black box' DR device
Axxana rolled out its "black box" The Phoenix System, an enterprise data recording (EDR) system the startup claims enables disaster recovery (DR) with no data loss over any geographical distance and at a cost savings over traditional DR methods.

BlueBackUp designs bare-metal backup service

Oodrive Technologies is offering BlueBackUp, an online backup service with bare-metal recovery for large organizations. BlueBackUp installs a local backup server at the customer site, so the backup of company data is done in-house through the local-area network (LAN) and data is automatically replicated to external servers. Recovery points are generated every five minutes.

Neverfail sustains growth over last fiscal year

DR software vendor Neverfail claims 50% year-over-year revenue growth during its fiscal year that ended March 31. The privately held company attributes its growth to OEM deals with VMware Inc. and AVST for Neverfail's application-aware protection for mission-critical business tools.

Clearpace launches virtual appliance

Clearpace Software Ltd. rolled out a virtual edition of NParchive, its data compression and storage product. The NParchive virtual appliance lets structured data run as a virtual machine. Clearpace claims a 40:1 compression rate for structured data. NParchive can run on any VMware-supported hardware.

Autonomy manages more than 10 PBs
Autonomy Corp. said its Digital Safe product is managing more than 10 PBs of email, documents and multimedia data. Digital Safe is powered by Autonomy's Intelligent Data Operating Layer (IDOL), which intakes, deduplicates, indexes and extracts metadata from files.
