This week's storage product news

Atempo Inc. introduced file archiving software with full support for Mac operating environments

Atempo Digital Archive 2.3 provides full Mac OS X compatibility, a Mac-specific administration interface, and support for Apple Xsan and other shared file systems. These features, along with integration with Apple's Final Cut Server, give Mac environments the ability to administer and operate the software without having to introduce and maintain another operating system. This creates a file archiving program optimized for industries that require a large amount of storage, such as media and entertainment.

Zmanda upgrades Recovery Manager

Zmanda Inc. upgraded its Zmanda Recovery Manager (ZRM) for MySQL backup and recovery solution. ZRM 3.1 includes a visual log analyzer that allows database administrators to identify operator errors, catch malicious database changes, and recover from errors or malicious events by restoring information from previous backups. In addition, Zmanda said it would demonstrate backup of MySQL to the upcoming storage cloud offering from Sun Microsystems Inc. at this week's MySQL Conference and Expo.

Tandberg Data expands StorageLibrary T40 series

Tandberg Data introduced a scalable tape library called the StorageLibrary T120+. It offers 24 to 114 slots with capacities ranging from 9.6 TB to 91 TB, as well as a choice of full height and half-height LTO-3 and LTO-4 drives and management features.

Brocade becomes an HP Virtual Connect partner

Brocade became a manufacturing and marketing partner for the new Hewlett-Packard (HP) Co. Virtual Connect 8 Gbps 24-port Fibre Channel module. The module will provide storage-area network connectivity within the new HP BladeSystem Matrix converged storage, server, software and networking platform.

Emulex provides 8 Gbps Fibre Channel SAN connectivity for HP

Emulex Corp.'s LightPulse 8 Gbps Fibre Channel (FC) host bus adapters (HBAs) have been optimized for use with the new HP BladeSystem Matrix. The Emulex LPe1205-HP 8 Gbps FC HBA is also available for use with HP BladeSystem c-Class and server blades, including HP ProLiant G6 and HP Integrity blades.

QLogic launches 8 Gb FC mezzanine adapter for HP BladeSystem Matrix

QLogic Corp.'s 8 Gbps Fibre Channel (FC) QMH2562 PCI Express-based mezzanine adapter is available with the HP BladeSystem Matrix. The QLogic QMH2562 provides comprehensive access control for virtualized FC storage-area networks, including fabric-level isolation through QLogic N_Port ID Virtualization (NPIV) technology.

NASA Ames, National Geographic pick Spectra Logic Federal for data archive

NASA Ames installed two Spectra Logic Inc. Spectra T950 tape libraries with LTO-4 drives and media, which together offer approximately 20,000 data storage slots and up to 32 petabytes of storage capacity with data compression. By doing so, NASA Ames freed more than 1,400 square feet of data center floor space.

National Geographic Global Media has acquired a five-frame Spectra T950 with LTO-4 drives and more than 6,000 tape slots to store its entire collection of high-resolution digital content as it's migrated from primary disk using SGI's DMF software. The T950 archive will also store a backup copy of the low-resolution proxy data on tape for long-term access.

Study finds two-thirds of storage shops use tape and disk

A survey of more than 200 network administrators and technology specialists at mid- to large-sized U.S. companies found that 66% of storage organizations use a tiered method of disk and tape for backup, disaster recovery and compliance. The Linear Tape-Open Program and its Technology Provider Companies (Hewlett-Packard, IBM Corp. and Quantum Corp.) sponsored the survey.

Data centers replacing tape in mainframe environments

Data Domain Inc. and Luminex Corp. said ICW Group Insurance Companies, Ingram Entertainment Inc. and Motion Industries Inc. have replaced mainframe tape libraries from IBM Corp. and Sun Microsystems Inc. with Luminex Channel Gateway mainframe virtual tape libraries and Data Domain data deduplication systems.
