Rorke launches post-production SAN

Rorke Data Inc. is making its 8 Gbps Galaxy Aurora LiteSpeed (LS) direct-attached RAID and storage-area network (SAN) appliance generally available.

The 12-bay Galaxy Aurora LS features one, two or four 8 Gbps ports, and can be configured as direct-attached storage (DAS) or a SAN appliance with up to 15 TB of usable storage capacity with RAID 6. The system supports multiple uncompressed HD streams or 2 K film, making it suited for video post-production shops.

Gear6 to launch new caching device

Gear6 will launch its Web Cache memcached-based appliance with built-in failover and replication next week at the MySQL Conference & Expo 2009. Web Cache reduces the number of memcached servers and adds management capabilities. Memcached is a high-performance, distributed memory object caching system for speeding up dynamic Web applications by alleviating database load. However, memcache usually requires more expensive memory and server resources.

Thales rolls out standards-based key management appliance

Thales Group launched Thales Encryption Manager for Storage (TEMS), a standards-based encryption key management appliance for storage managers. TEMS is designed to eliminate the need to deploy multiple key management systems, and gives vendors the option to partner with an independent key management provider.

Atto, Hitachi GST declare interoperability between 6 Gbps SAS products

Atto Technology Inc. and Hitachi Global Storage Technologies (GST) disclosed interoperability of their respective 6 Gbps SAS designed for use in high-performance server and storage applications. The combination of Atto ExpressSAS host bus adapters (HBAs) with Hitachi Ultrastar C10K300 hard drives allows for 6 Gbps data transfer rates.

Nirvanix receives $5 million in funding

Nirvanix Inc. raised $5 million in funding from its original investors Intel Capital, Mission Ventures, Valhalla Partners and Windward Ventures. The round brings Nirvanix's total funding to more than $23 million, which the vendor will use to expand its enterprise cloud service offerings.

Clemson University selects Voltaire to accelerate computational research

The Clemson University Computational Center for Mobility Systems (CU-CCMS) has selected Voltaire Inc. Grid Director InfiniBand switches and 10 Gigabit Ethernet gateways for a high-performance computing system based on products from Sun Microsystems Inc. CU-CCMS's 35 teraflop system reduces the time to do computational simulations from weeks to hours.

InfiniBand Trade Association plans Plugfest

The 15th annual InfiniBand Trade Association Compliance and Interoperability Plugfest will take place April 20-24, 2009, in the University of New Hampshire's Interoperability Lab. InfiniBand device and cable vendors will test double data rate (DDR) and quad data rate (QDR) devices, as well as new procedures for QDR active cables.
