Hitachi delivers 6 gig SAS enterprise drive

Hitachi Global Storage Technologies introduced a 6 Gbps SAS small form factor enterprise hard drive. The 10K rpm Ultrastar C10K300 has low power specifications and is optimized for rack-mounted servers and networked storage arrays. The new drives are offered in 147 GB and 300 GB capacities.

The Ultrastar C10K300 is designed to provide higher server/storage density through a 2.5-inch design, a low-power profile and improved thermal characteristics. It occupies 70% less physical space and consumes up to 65% less power than similar 3.5-inch enterprise drives.

Xyratex revenue down, losses soar

Storage systems vendor Xyratex Ltd.'s revenue of $183.9 million last quarter decreased 15.3% from the same quarter last year, and the vendor lost $16.1 million for the quarter. CEO Steve Barber said the company would restructure to reduce annual expenses by 10% to 15%.

Atto Technology delivers 6 Gb SAS/SATA host adapters

Atto Technology Inc. released a family of five 6 Gbps SAS host adapters: the ExpressSAS H608, H680, H644, H60F and H6F0. The H60F and H6F0 feature two independent controllers, support for up to 512 physical devices, as well as 16 independent lanes of 600 MBps connectivity for an aggregate throughput of up to 19.2 GB full duplex.

New Jersey city picks Pivot3 for security

The city of Trenton, N.J., and the Trenton Police Dept. have employed Pivot3 Inc. clustered storage to support video surveillance projects. Pivot3 storage is used to provide access to 30 days of video from IP security cameras at the Trenton city hall.

Winery selects Silver Peak Systems

Ste. Michelle Wine Estates picked Silver Peak Systems Inc.'s NX Series wide-area network (WAN) acceleration appliances to reduce network latency and optimize bandwidth utilization between its wineries in California, Oregon and Washington.

New SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 supports Emulex HBAs, CNAs

Emulex Corp.'s LightPulse Fibre Channel host bus adapters (HBAs) and LightPulse converged network adapters (CNAs) are supported by SUSE Linux Server 11. The HBAs and CNAs support virtual port technology, allowing fabric zoning and logical unit number (LUN) mapping, as well as masking at the virtual machine level.

QNAP launches NAS boxes

QNAP Systems Inc. announced one-bay and two-bay network-attached storage (NAS) systems for home, small office/home office, and small- and medium-sized business users. The TS-119 supports a 2 TB SATA hard drive and 4 TB total capacity with an expansion drive. The TS-219 Turbo NAS supports two hot-swappable 2 TB hard drives, RAID 1, Online RAID Capacity Expansion and Online RAID Level Migration.

Dot Hill expands distributor partnership in Japan

Dot Hill Systems Corp. expanded its relationship with support and service provider Uniadex Ltd. in Japan. Uniadex will sell Dot Hill 2722 Fibre Channel RAID arrays to its resellers and users in Japan.
